Graham Sutherland
I had a chance to visit the Graham Sutherland exhibition at the MOMA in Oxford.  They had managed to bring together quite a lot of his work from together collectors together.  Some major work were missing like the 'Crucifixion' and the some of the 'Thorn Trees' series. Did not allow pictures.  Quite sad!

Dan Flavin famously said painting was dead when he was referring to it as there being more to art than a 2D visual. (Thompson, J. 2008)

Wolverhampton Society of Artists - November 2011

Out of all the paintings and images on display this one caught my eye.  Birmingham canals are an everyday part of life my life.

Sep 24 - Nov 5, 2011

The show was a set of videos projected onto different walls of the gallery. They were a mix of still shots and running footage.  The artist had layered them in a way that brought both elements together to create a whole.

Robert Perry - Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Robert Perry is one of my absolutely favourite landscape artists.  He recently very kindly took the time to make a postcard for a postcard art auction fundraiser for the final show of the degree at Worcester.

Tate Liverpool - October 2011

Jasper Johns
'0-9' 1960
Use of colour, brushwork, ambiguity of appearance.  Can you see all the numbers 0-9, or just one or two of them?  I could definitely see a three and a four.  If not for title you wouldn’t have guessed. He layers with his brush, not in lines or bands like Sean Scully but in individual brushstrokes, laying a small part.  Possibly very time consuming.

Graham Benton
at
Walsall Art Gallery
23rd October 2011

I was interested to visit this exhibition at Walsall Art Gallery because Graham is of one of the St Ives artists whom I love.  I hope to get down to St Ives sometime this year but I’m not sure when that will be.  Graham Benton’s exhibition was on the top floor of the gallery.

His work was based on landscape and although not specifically a grid like, he had used linear marks to outline some angles of the landscape he was working with.  Specifically with ‘Harbour Blue’ 1977 Here he also uses of square and colour.  Also evident in ‘Megalith 1984’.

His sketchbooks revealed the use of masking tape which he used quite well with pencil or graphite to emphasise shadow and shape.

MAC Birmingham - October 2011

I have always visited the MAC and was happy to find a painting show on of which there never seem enough in Birmingham, apart from the RBSA.
